I don't have much info to give regarding the origins of this comp. or the label that put it out. The Bandcamp says the label is from New York, but that doesn't help much. With little to no info guiding me in the right direction, the one thing I know for sure is that the six bands featured on this thing are all super rad and feature a bunch of my friends and their stellar musical visions. This starts with a relatively quick blast from Wet Petals from New York, who turn out a song that wouldn't have been out of place on a Jihad record. The second song is from People's Temple Project who are also from New York. They turn out a 13 second ditty that is over as quick as it began. Song number 3 comes to us from Baton Rouge's own Secret Smoker. They don't disappoint with their always solid take on DC influenced emocore and the longest song on the record. Coma Regalia from Indiana grace the number 4 spot with their already legendary take on emoviolence. The always mysterious Oregon/Canada basketcases in мятеж blow up song #5 with their own unnerving noise/lo-fi/violence concoction. Finally, rounding out this thing is the always entertaining Waller from Maryland. They throw down a track that brings to mind equal parts Killdozer and Scratch Acid. Completely odd and strangely fitting after the emo onslaught that preceded it. All in all, this compilation offers up a few bands that some folks may not be familiar with, some they most certainly will be familiar with and a concept as strange and mysterious as the label that put it out.

Cutters - We Are The Quarry
Bandcamp
The last time I reviewed Cutters, I likened their lo-fi approach to bands such as Built To Spill, Cloud Nothings and Teenage Cool Kids. On this new record, I believe they certainly retain a lot of that sound & feel, while throwing in a lot more straight-ahead rock-n-roll along the way. The vocals are still strong and clear and sung with so much heart it's near impossible not to sing along. The lyrics are brimming with positive vibes and hopeful miseries and I am more than reminded of Piebald in the lyrical and vocal delivery. So, Cutters have blessed their first LP upon the world filled with a little pop, a lot of rock-n-roll, a liberal dose of ramshackle fuzz and a whole lot of gusto. This time around, I am reminded of Piebald, Oxford Collapse, Reigning Sound and the aforementioned bands from the last review. All in all, this record has all the bases covered for fans of the straight up, good ol' fashioned boogie.

Cassilis - Quitting
BandcampFacebook
Download
Um... Yeah... If you like it noisy, discordant, unbalanced and pissed, you don't have to look any further than the new offering from these dirty assholes from Philadelphia. Cassilis have become a verifiable wrecking machine dead set on decimating the ears of any unwitting prick who dare decide to drop the needle onto that groove. This goes beyond Punk, beyond Hardcore, beyond Screamo... These songs are lessons in damage. Take equal parts City of Caterpillar, the Jesus Lizard and a motherfucking atomic bomb and mix liberally. Go fuck yourself if you don't think this is going to be the best record of 2014.

Anopheli - A Hunger Rarely Sated
Bandcamp
"Melancholy Doom-laden Emo Crust." There is nothing else that needs to be said. This band features members of other, very well known bands and is about as right on as it gets. Hailing from Oakland by way of London by way of a smoldering, burned out apocalyptic wasteland, I don't really know what else to say. If that initial description gave you goose bumps the way it gives me goose bumps, you should have no excuse but to absolutely fall in love with this and listen to it every day until the sun explodes and the world comes to an end. This should appeal to fans of Oroku, Alpinist, Fall of Efrafa, Vestiges, Lentic Waters, Jungbluth and the like.

Dirt Nap - Just Ask The Boyz
Bandcamp
Tumblr
Here we have the debut from Dirt Nap who hail from Springfield, Missouri. There are some guys from the band Dirk Frazel in the ranks here, so the stoned nature of these songs begins to make a bit more sense. Dirt Nap play it scuzzy, fuzzy, loose and unhinged. There are very prominent elements of Surf-Rock and possibly circus music and even some... Maybe, Latin rhythms. Shit! This is, like, THE Slack-Rock record for the new millennium. I am really glad I am stoned right now, otherwise I don't know if this would make nearly as much sense as it does. These songs are jangly, super lo-fi and really, really charming. The vocals are drawled with a sort of I-don't-give-a-shit energy that really works within the framework. I hear bits and pieces of everything from Built to Spill, Pavement, the Jesus and Mary Chain and Oxford Collapse. Basically, this record incorporates elements from Grunge to dirty Indie-Rock to Post-Punk and New-wave while being completely blanketed in the sort of outright reefer madness these guys have become known for. The three D's are very highly represented here... Dirty, Dancey and Deranged and personally, I wouldn't want it any other way.

Saintly Rows - Everything That I Was Afraid Of Happening, Happened EP
Bandcamp
Wow! Just, Wow!
Normally, I can rattle off some stupid shit about genre and tone and other bands you might like if you like this... Right now, I am seriously at a loss for words. This is brilliant Post-Everything from Albuquerque. Their first EP was rad, this is so much better. I can't wait for them to come to Seattle. That's all.

The Importance Of Safety.
Is this formality?
Or, is it hope and heartache?
Are we supposed to feel so many headaches?
Another lost language, sullied by time.
I don't know if I am Hercules or Heracles...?
At least I can still breathe amongst these savages.
Amongst these...
My mournings are uneventful.
Until I make her dinner.
To see this look on her face, it's worth everything.
Why else would I wake up?
If it didn't consist of building her evening.
She owes me nothing.
She sows me something.
Milk & water & grain & lemon juice.
I owe her everything.
Manifest youth...
You sound like the worst assholes.
Maybe you kids are the nicest people ever.
Off in a distance, I shouldn't even venture a guess.
I imagine assholes.

Dirk Frazel - Randy's Bacon EP
Bandcamp Link
Facebook Link
Here we have three songs from some high dudes out of Springfield, MO. Incorporating a little Skrumz, a little Post-Something, a bit of Lo-Fi fuzz and a lot of reefer madness, these songs travel a well worn path that never grows stale. The vocals are buried under a mountain of instrumentation yet still audible enough to add that welcome feeling of chaotic, cathartic recklessness to the songs. I bet these green lanterns could really tear apart a living room with their Lync meets Army Of Ponch meets Bonehouse amalgam. Good job, gentlemen!! I can't wait to hear more. Also, come to Seattle, I want to smoke you out!!!

Obsidian Kingdom - Mantiis
Obsidian Kingdom on Facebook
Bandcamp / Download
Obsidian Kingdom play Progressive, Post-Metal that has been throwing me for a loop lately. The music here is very slick and very well executed. I never listen to stuff like this, so I have been finding it quite difficult to describe or compare this at all. These guys are from Barcelona... 'Mantiis' is a conceptual Rock Opera type of thing. The lyrics are odd and vague, almost creepy at times. Some parts remind me of System Of A Down, others remind me of Tool... Still others sound almost like atmospheric Black Metal or something... I nearly started feeling bad about the vagueness of this review since it came as a band or label request, until I remembered that this is my blog and I can say whatever I want about these records. While these songs as a whole are competent and interesting enough, I just feel like there are too many avenues being explored at once to make this completely cohesive.
