Kowloon Walled City-'Gambling On The Richter Scale' LP

Bandcamp / Facebook

I stumbled across this one day while researching bands from San Francisco that I may have missed since moving to Seattle.  They had been nice enough to offer the record as a free download on their Myspace page.  I can think of very few things that are actually more punk than giving your music away for free.  Anyway,  Kowloon Walled City are indeed from SF.  And yes,  they play wonderful, sludgy, thundering Post Metal/Hardcore in the same vein as Fight Amp, Javelina and Fall of Efrafa.  The thing that sets these noise mongers apart from their peers though, is this strange habit of sometimes playing parts that sound like Quicksand or Unbroken or some other long lost Post-Hardcore band from the 90's.  And I can't fucking get enough of it!!  One minute you are being pummelled by some soggy, resin clogged Sabbath riff, only to turn around and get hit with some strange, off kilter breakdown.  The vocals don't stray too far from the usual.  Throat shredding growls that can summon the ghosts of the great fire of 1906.  I highly recommend this to people that wish Neurosis still sounded like they did on 'Pain Of Mind'.
