Mudbath - Red Desert Orgy EP

I don't pretend to have that much interest in Doom Metal. Some people I know live for the stuff to the point that is sort of baffling me. I mean, I have enjoyed YOB, Bongzilla and Electric Wizard live and on record and I absolutely LOVE Grief and Eyehategod... But the majority of bands playing the style just bore me to tears. Sometimes, slow is just too slow. When I got a request to review this EP from Mudbath and they mentioned EHG and playing with Birds In Row, I knew I was going to enjoy it. And enjoy it I have. These Sludge merchants from the south of France have churned out 3 songs of raw, blackened Stoner Metal that doesn't sacrifice speed for power... Or, power for speed... Either way, these songs are bitter, molasses drenched tomes to the misery that is modern life. Take equal parts Black Sabbath boogie, mix in the oppressiveness of Buzzov*en and temper with your basic Dystopian nihilism and you might come close to what Mudbath have created. Not too fast and definitely not too slow, with each song clocking in at 7 minutes or longer, there are plenty of hooks, peaks and valleys within these compositions that it's virtually impossible to get bored. They would certainly fit in well playing a stage with the likes of Embers, Samothrace or even Black Breath. I am personally going to pack another bowl right now and listen to this again.
